Jesus 72 Steps from Glory to Glory

Step 25 Part 1: The Twelve Disciples

From a Galilean Synagogue to Mount Tabor (?)<

Matt.5:1-7:29; 4:24-25; 10:2-4; 12:15-21

Mark 1:12; 3:7-19;

 Luke 6:12-49; 12:22-31, 57-69;16:17

In the Galilean Synagogue, Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath. This made the Pharisees so mad that they began to plan how to kill Jesus.  Jesus leaves this place and begins traveling to the place where He will deliver His most important and famous sermon, The Sermon on the Mount.

  1. As He travels, He will heal people.

“Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. Great multitudes followed Him—from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.”

Matthew 4:24-25 NKJV

*(Also see Mark 3:7-12)

2.  Demons acknowledged Him when He cast them out.

“And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, “You are the Son of God.” But He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known.”  Mark 3:11-12 NKJV

  • Why did Jesus warn the demons not to make Him known?
  • He continues to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah
  • He will be God’s chosen one.
  • His justice will be shown to all nations
  • He will not be obnoxious. (Not Quarrel)
  • He will be gentle. (not break a bruised reed)
  • His name will mean victory and hope for all nations.

“that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He will declare justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel nor cry out, Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench, Till He sends forth justice to victory; And in His name Gentiles will trust.”  Matthew 12:17-21 NKJV

Also see- Isaiah 9:1-2; 42:1-3 and Matt.4:13-16

  • His fourth time of prayer. Before He chose the twelve apostles, He spent the night in prayer.

“Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:”

Luke 6:12-13 NKJV

  • Consider the importance of these men who would carry the Gospel to the world

What if they failed?

  • The Twelve- these were not the only disciples, but they were the ones that Jesus chose for a special purpose.

The list can be found in these scriptures. Matt.10:2-4; Mark3:13-19; Luke 6:13-19

  •  Simon Peter- the little rock
  • John-(the Beloved)
  • James- (the Greater).  James and John are brothers. The sons of Zebedee, also called by Jesus the Sons of Thunder
  • Andrew-Peter’s brother and the one who introduced Peter to Jesus
  • Philip- in Acts, Philip led the Ethiopian eunuch to Jesus
  • Bartholomew- (Nathanael) Jesus saw him under the fig tree
  • Thomas- (Didymus) called Doubting Thomas
  • Matthew- (Levi). Tax collector
  • James (the Son of Aphaeus), also known as the Lesser, probably because he was smaller than the other James
  • Judas (Thadeus), also known as Judas (the Greater)
  • Simon ( The Zealot)
  • Judas Iscariot
  • After choosing the twelve the next day, He continues to heal people,

“And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.”

Luke 6:17-19 NKJV

After this He goes to the Sermon on the Mount. We will need more than a few minutes to talk about this, so we will cover it next time.

From the Bible

And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
