Divine Comfort in the Midst of Storms: Lessons Learned from Mark 4:35-41

Storms

In America, we are proud of our abilities. As a nation, we can do just about anything we set our minds to. We have gone to the moon, conquered rogue nations, and eradicated devastating diseases. It seems that our scientists are unstoppable, our armies are unbeatable and our will is unbreakable.

However, lest we start to think more highly of ourselves than we should, let’s consider the weather. Often, portions of our nation have been devastated by great meteorological menaces. For days in advance, we watch the satellite images as monster storms form in the ocean.

We know they are coming and we know they are going to be destructive. But we can only wait defenselessly as these terrible storms march ruthlessly onto our shores.

Sure, we can be prepared for these forces of nature. But we can do nothing to stop even the smallest hurricanes. Why? Because the only strength our nation has comes from the Creator of all things. Jesus Christ is the only one who can say to the storms, “Peace be Still.” He is the only One who can calm the sea.

To Him, we must say “O Lord, You are my God. I will exalt you, I will praise your name, for You have done wonderful things. Therefore, the people will glorify You. You have been a strength to the poor. You have been a refuge from the storm.”

Remember this, the earth will shake, the fires will rage and storms will roar but God is always in control. He doesn’t always calm our storms but always cares for His children.

“On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.

But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
