Thanksgiving: A Time for Prayer and Gratitude 1 Thess.5:16

Give Thanks

I love Thanksgiving. We eat turkey and dressing —and gravy. Families spend time together and I go hunting. Thanksgiving comes at the best time of the year. I love the falling leaves, the cool days, the cold nights, and the smell of smoke from someone’s fireplace. I love Thanksgiving for many reasons. However, I love most that grateful people are giving thanks to our good and gracious God.

In First Thessalonians, Paul the Apostle teaches us about thanksgiving. He begins by showing us that we should give thanks always for one another. We should be thankful for our churches, church leaders, and our pastors. We thank God for our brothers and sisters in the Lord. We should also constantly lift each other up in prayer.

The Word of God tells us that it is His will that we should give thanks in everything. Now, I do not think that God is insisting that we give thanks for all things. There are some things for which we are just not going to be thankful. Yet, God has promised never to leave us nor forsake us.   Therefore, no matter what circumstance we are in, we can give thanks. We know that God is in it with us.

The Bible teaches that we are to rejoice always because there is always joy to be found in Jesus. We should pray without ceasing because we have a God who never ceases to listen to our prayers.  In everything we can give thanks because God is victorious over all things.

I love Thanksgiving. It reminds me that my gracious God in Heaven is worthy of all my gratitude every day.

“Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
