It Was Fun
Captain James T. Kirk was the lead character in the science fiction series, Star Trek. The movie “Star Trek Generations” was the last one in which William Shatner would play the character of Captain Kirk. In the film, Kirk is called on to travel through time to prevent an evil villain from destroying millions of lives. Of course, Captain Kirk won the battle and the enemy was defeated. But James Kirk was mortally wounded. As he breathed his last, he asked, “Were we successful, did we make a difference?” The answer was yes. So, Captain Kirk said, “Good, it was fun.”
Why would I mention this scene from an old movie in a spiritual devotion? Well as I listened to Captain Kirk’s last words, I was reminded of our purpose on this earth. We have received a call that has transcended time. The call is to put on the armor of God. We are to stand against the wiles of the devil who wants to destroy many souls. Our mission is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind. We are also to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. If we do this, with our dying breath we can know that we have made a difference. We can say,’It was fun.”
Like Captain Kirk, we want to know if we are successful. But God does not measure success as the world does. The Bible tells us that if we obey the word of God, then the Father’s love is made complete in us. This is how the world knows that we are in Christ and Christ is in us.
The Apostle Paul speaks to us in 1 Timothy 6:12-14, He says “Fight the good fight for the faith. Take hold of the eternal life that you were called to. In the presence of God, who gives life to all, and of Christ Jesus, I charge you to keep His command without fault or failure until our Lord Jesus Christ appears.”
Our Savior has already defeated the enemy but we are still called to fight the fight. If we are obedient, the joy of the Lord will be our strength. Then with our last breath, we can say “I have been successful, I have made a difference. Good, it was fun.”
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;”
