Life
Summer is coming to an end. Every day now the sun is a little slower to rise above the trees in the morning and quicker to sink below the horizon in the evening. The days are still hot but the mornings and evenings are cool and pleasant. As I listen to the birds, it seems that their songs have a slower tempo and looking at the trees, I see that their leaves are a lighter shade of green. Every year it seems that summer tries to sneak away without being noticed, but I am fully aware that soon the 68 th summer of my life will be gone.
The changing seasons remind me that the most consistent thing this world has to offer is inconsistency. Great buildings need constant maintenance to keep them from crumbling. Junkyards are full of rusted automobiles that once symbolized someone’s status. Somewhere there is a shower of birdseed as a bride and groom rejoice in their future. But the future comes quickly. Soon one of them stands old and bent at the grave of their loved one.
This is an unyielding truth; time is a great threshing machine that is harvesting the days of our lives. The Bible teaches that our life here on earth is like a vapor that quickly fades away. If we only have hope in this life, then we are most miserable. The good news is that our joy and purpose are not found in this life only. Jesus has promised us that if we hear His voice and follow Him, He will give us life that will never fade away.
Here today and gone tomorrow is our life on this earth. Yes, life is brief, but everlasting hope is found in Jesus. In Him we can find the Way we can travel, the Truth we can believe, and Life eternal.
“The eyes of all look expectantly to You, And You give them their food in due season. You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works. The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them. The Lord preserves all who love Him, But all the wicked He will destroy. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord, And all flesh shall bless His holy name Forever and ever.”
