Our God Reigns: A Call to Faith in Troubling Times Psalms 47

Our God Still Reigns

In the Bible, God tells us to “Be still and know that I am God.”  These days, wickedness abounds and evil is celebrated.  So now, more than ever, we need to humbly bow our heads and experience His unmistakable sovereignty.  At night the whippoorwill declares that God is good.  In the morning the birds awaken to sing to the glory of the Righteous King.  Just as the sunrise is inevitable, in the same way, we know that the Kingdom of God is unending.

God Reigns Forever

These are dangerous days for children of The One True God.  Satan is known as the prince of the power of the air.  For this reason, when a hand full of Mohammed’s followers is killed, the whole world hears about it.  But, every week hundreds of Christians are martyred by the Muslim faithful and the airwaves are silent.  These are dangerous days.  The world hates the things that God loves.  That is why evil people defend the murder of babies. They promote the persecution of Christians. They seek the destruction of families.

God Reigns Right Now

Yes, many people ridicule the idea of A Holy God.  But Christians need not live in fear.  He is God, and He keeps His promises.  For Moses, He made a highway in the middle of the Red Sea.  He caused the sun to stand still for Joshua.  In the fiery furnace, He took a leisurely stroll with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.  And because of God, Daniel spent the night with lions that suddenly didn’t have an appetite.  So, be still and listen. The creeks are murmuring about His Majesty. The birds are singing to His Glory. The wind is whispering loudly that Our God still reigns.

“Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph! For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth. He will subdue the peoples under us, And the nations under our feet. He will choose our inheritance for us, The excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah God has gone up with a shout, The Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding. God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne. The princes of the people have gathered together, The people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted.”

Down Where the Pavement Ends

.

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
