Regrets
“Regrets, I’ve had a few, but then again, too few to mention.” This is a line from an old song that many people have recorded. After a few more lines, the singer always proclaims loudly and proudly, “I did it my way.” Whenever I hear this song, I always think, “That is really stupid.”
Personally, I have to say, Regrets. I have a bunch of them. In fact, I have too many to name. I know that all my regrets are the result of my trying to do things my way. The Bible teaches that a man’s way may seem right, but it always leads down a dangerous path.
Regrets are ferocious prosecutors. Like good lawyers, they know the facts and keep hammering you with them. They keep you awake at night. The video of your regrets runs on a loop, playing over and over in your mind—and the pause button is broken.
What can be done about regrets? Nothing. You don’t get any redos in life, and mistakes cannot be undone. The man who wrote, “I Did It My Way,” may have made a lot of money from his music, but he didn’t make any from his screwups.
Wise people don’t boast about their regrets; they learn from them. Truly wise people learn to bring their future choices to God. The Bible teaches us that we should acknowledge God and trust Him with all our being. If we do this, He will press the pause button on our regrets and give us perfect peace.
So, if our regrets teach us anything, it is that we cannot rely on our own understanding. And now, there is a new song for us to sing. It goes like this : “Leave behind your regrets and mistakes. Come today, there’s no reason to wait. Jesus is calling.” *
Jesus is calling. He will instruct you and teach you the way you must go. He has seen it all, and the way He leads is perfect.
