Spiritual and National Freedom: A Call to Preserve

Long before the creation of Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman, some brave men stood for truth, believed in justice, and invented the American Way. These great men were the signers of the Declaration of Independence. These men were not bulletproof, but they were willing to face a hail of bullets for the sake of freedom. They firmly relied on the Protection of Divine Providence as they pledged to each other their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in support of the Declaration of Independence.

In my possession is a book that contains important American historical documents.  On the cover of this book is an emblem containing the word “veritas”.  “Veritas” is a Latin word meaning “truth”.  The greatest document in our nation’s history contains these words “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”  The greatest truth found in that statement is this, we the people were created to be free, and our unalienable rights are given to us by the Creator.

Another truth found in this great document is that the purpose of government is to secure our rights and then stay out of our way while we enjoy them. It is with our consent that the government governs.  If at any time our God-given rights are assaulted by those in government, then we have the right and duty to remove that consent. As free people, it is our responsibility to maintain our freedom.

In Galatians 5:1 we read; “Christ has liberated us to be free. Stand firm then and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.”  We know that Jesus died so we might be free from our sin.  It would be foolish for us to surrender again to the tyranny of Satan. So, therefore, we must resist the devil and stand firm with Christ. Our spiritual and national freedoms were obtained for us with great sacrifice. We must preserve both. As citizens of Heaven and citizens of America, let us never forget that we were set free to live in freedom.

From Down Where the Pavement Ends

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
