The World is Not Enough
The 11th chapter of Hebrews is known as The Faith Chapter. There, we find the names of many great heroes of faith. These great men and women trusted God and lived out their faith from Abel to David. Most of them could have had anything the world had to offer. Yet their faith taught them that the world is not enough.
Today, we are bombarded with the sights and sounds of earthly offerings. Our hearts long for things we don’t have. But does our heart really long for these things? Or are we like Pavlov’s dog, drooling over things the world has taught us to drool over?
People rush from place to place, trying to grasp the ungraspable. When I was young, cars seldom made it to 100,000 miles. Now, that milestone is reached in its first year. Children are hauled all over creation. Parents have been conditioned to fulfill worldly expectations. And yet, meeting worldly expectations will never bring satisfaction.
The Bible teaches us that we should “Come out from the world and be separate people.” This means that we should not let the world direct our paths. The Word of God also teaches us to “Be still and know that He is God.” We need to rest in His arms. Let the world rush on by. We will find that God is all we need.
Faith in God makes intangible things tangible and impossible things possible. All great Heroes of the Faith know this. They rush only to please God and grab only for the things He has to offer. Hebrews Chapter 11 teaches us this. Even if we can grasp all the world has to offer, we will find that the world will never be enough.
“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.
And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment.
They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”
