The DNA of an American: Stories of Faith and Perseverance

I Am an American

I am an American.  A Dutchman’s DNA is in my blood. In the early 1600s, he climbed aboard a small sailing ship. He crossed a dangerous ocean. He sought freedom to worship God as led by the Holy Spirit. He also wanted the ability to prosper in a new land.

I am an American. Within my blood is the DNA of men and women who carved a life out of the wilderness. They were farmers and hunters working hard to provide food and life necessities for their families. They were businessmen who thrived in a capitalist free market society. They were Christians who built churches and shared their faith with their neighbors.

I am an American. Patriots’ blood flows in my veins. They picked up their squirrel guns to defend themselves from an oppressive government. After the war, they traveled from New Jersey to Virginia to North Carolina and finally settled in Goosepond, Georgia.

I am an American. I am proud to carry in my blood the DNA of men who felt compelled to take up arms and fight under the Stars and Bars of the Southern States. Some died, some lost limbs, and one man who was my Grandfathers Grandfather suffered greatly as a prisoner of war.

I am an American. I am blessed to have inherited the DNA of my parents and grandparents. They were and are Great Americans. They worked hard and prayed even harder. They worshiped and served the King of Kings, Jesus Christ.

I am an American. I pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, and now, we must again become one Nation under God and forever be indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Down Where the Pavement Ends

From the Bible

Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph! For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth. He will subdue the peoples under us, And the nations under our feet. He will choose our inheritance for us, The excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah God has gone up with a shout, The Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!

For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding. God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne. The princes of the people have gathered together, The people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted.”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
