I remember having a deep conversation with a young man. He was devoutly religious, but we came from two entirely different religious backgrounds. He would have called himself a Christian, but he was not. You see, his religion acknowledged Jesus but denied His preexistence and the virgin birth. This young man was kind, gentle, sincere, and good-hearted. But he was wrong about Jesus. Being wrong about Jesus is dangerous.
The two of us had a good talk that day. However, while we talked, I chose not to denigrate his beliefs or attack his religion. Being argumentative or rude never contributes to a good discussion. So, I decided instead to talk about the one true Jesus whom I know and love.
The truth is, God has not blessed me with the gift of persuasion, so I cannot convince anyone to follow Jesus. My responsibility is to tell the truth as clearly as possible, then trust the Holy Spirit to bear witness to that truth.
That day, the young man learned about the Holy Trinity. I explained that in Genesis, when God the Father said, “Let Us make man in Our own image,” He was speaking to God the Son. The Holy Trinity was also evident at the baptism of Jesus. God the Father declared that He was pleased with God the Son, while God the Holy Spirit descended from heaven like a dove.
I also told Him that, in the fullness of time, God the Son left His throne in heaven to be born of a virgin. A manger was His cradle, and shepherds were His first visitors.
Later, Jesus died on a cross and was buried in a borrowed tomb. Three days later, He rose from the grave. Historically, hundreds witnessed the risen Savior, who was very much alive. Then He ascended to heaven, where He now sits once again at the right hand of God the Father in glory.
What became of the young man I spoke with that day? How did he respond to the Gospel message? I don’t know. That was the last time I ever saw him. Hopefully, God used me as a positive influence in his life. Wherever he is today, it is my prayer that he has become a true believer in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
