Jesus’s 72 Steps from Glory to Glory
Step 20: Nazareth to Capernaum
Matt.4:13-22; 8:14-17; Mark 1:14-38; Luke 4:31-44
When Jesus visited His hometown of Nazareth, He was asked to read Scripture and speak in the local synagogue. The religious leaders did not like what He had to say so they tried to kill Him. This highlights the scripture: “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.”
After this He leaves Nazareth and goes to Capernaum. Capernaum becomes His new home and headquarters.
“And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” Matthew 4:13-16 NKJV
- Jesus begins to emphasize the Kingdom of Heaven and the doctrine of Repentance.
“From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17 NKJV
“Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:14-15 NKJV
- Matt. 4:12-16 Another Old Testament. Prophecy fulfilled: That He would be light to the Gentiles.
(Compare Isa.9:1,2; 42:1-3; 60:1-3 with Matt.4:13-16 and Acts 13:47)
- Matt. 4:21-22 Mark:16-20 He calls Peter, Andrew, James, and John while they are casting their nets.
They respond by leaving their nets and following Him.
- Mark 1:23-28 Luke 4:31-36. Another miracle Jesus heals a Capernaum demoniac.
This is the first of many times Jesus will cast demons out of a human.

- What did Jesus say to the Demon? Mark1:25
- What did the people say? Mark 1:27
- Who or what are Demons? Demons are fallen angels who sided with Lucifer (The Devil, or Satan) during the rebellion in heaven before the creation of Man. See Isa. 14:12-16; Ezek. 28:15-17; Rev.12:4; Eph.6:12.
- Their activities are full of hate and malice.
- They oppose God’s purpose. Dan 9:11-14
- They are the executors of Satan’s plan. 1Tim: 4:11; Rev.16:12-14
- The afflict people by causing-
- Insanity – Matt. 8:28; 17:15
- Muteness of speech- Matt. 9:33
- Blindness- Matt. 12:22
- The person to harm himself- Mark 5:5
- Paralysis- Luke 13:11
- Deafness- Mark 9:25
- There are a large number of demons.
- Jesus cast out seven from Mary Magadelene. Mark 16:9; Luke 8:2
- Possibly as many as 6000 from the maniac at Gadara. Mark 5:9
There is more to this step. Before Jesus leaves Capernaum, He will: Heal Peters mother-in law and many others. We will talk about that next week.

“Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.”
