The Uncertainty of Tomorrows Plans
As a young man, I remember being told that to become influential and successful, you needed to have a vision and a goal for the future. The idea was to know what you wanted to do in life and how you would achieve it. This was and remains good advice.
However, this advice comes with a complication. You see, experience and the Bible teach us that we have no control over tomorrow. The truth is yesterday is history, today is full of surprises, and tomorrow, well, tomorrow at best, is uncertain.
All of us enjoy making plans. We plan weddings, surprise parties, or family vacations in great detail. We save our money, expecting to buy things. Sometimes our plans are simple, like saying, “Tomorrow I am going to cut the grass.” But then tomorrow arrives. Illness or death might take over your schedule. A broken appliance could drain your bank account, or maybe heavy rain will fall on your overgrown lawn. And then all you can do is shake your head and realize that you never really know what tomorrow may bring.
Tomorrow is out of your control. When it comes, it may be better or worse than you imagined—but it will come on its own terms. You cannot control tomorrow, but you can control your attitude today. Whether the sun shines or the rain falls, choose to enjoy your family, love your neighbor, and be kind to a stranger. Do not let the uncertainty of tomorrow diminish the joy in your heart today.
Proverbs 16:3 tells us that if we commit whatever we do to the Lord, He will establish our future. God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts, and His plans are greater than our plans. He not only sees our tomorrow, but all of our tomorrows. You may be disappointed by what tomorrow brings, but you will never be disappointed in the One who holds tomorrow.
