Early Morning Reflections: Embracing Each Day

Good Morning

For years, I have tried to start my mornings early. It’s hard for me to lie in bed knowing that the world is turning. Life is short, and I don’t want to miss a thing. Usually, I sit on my back porch. I read my Bible and have a cup of coffee with the Maker of all things.

Since my porch faces the southeast, I can watch the motion picture of the rising sun and the waking day. This morning, I am watching a doe with her two babies as they feed on the remnants of my garden. From the woods, I hear chattering squirrels, and all around me is the unmatched music of God’s orchestra.

I have things to do today, things I want to do. However, I am retired from my secular job. I no longer pastor a church. So, I can sit here a little longer and enjoy the morning with another cup of coffee. From the Bible, we learn that if we will just be still, we can know that He is God. So, this morning, I sit a little longer listening to the still, small voice of my Father in heaven.

Now it may seem to you that I am bragging, and I am. It may seem that my life is all sunshine and roses, and it is. But understand this, the sunshine will burn you and make you sweat, while roses have thorns that often draw blood. My life has been one of sunburned skin and sweat-soaked shirts. While the roses of this life have often pricked my skin and my heart, causing both to bleed. However, like the writer of Psalms 44, I will boast of my God all day long. I will praise His name forever.

I write these words as a praise to my Grand and Gracious God. I am blessed and I know it. He has been better to me than I deserve. However, I know that tomorrow everything could be taken from me, leaving me with just the air I breathe. If this happens, God will still be good. As long as I am able, I will rise early to greet the day. Because every day is a day that the Lord has made, and they all start with a Good Morning.

Pavement Ends Ministry

From the Bible

“I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. Save now, I pray, O Lord; O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We have blessed you from the house of the Lord. God is the Lord, And He has given us light; Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will praise You; You are my God, I will exalt You. Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.”

Psalms 118:21-29 NKJV

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night,

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)

I have been reading for a while but haven’t taken the time to listen to you speak. What an encouragement your words were today. Remember that retirement is not in the Bible. Though you may no longer have a church office or have the opportunity to preach every Sunday – I believe that since God has called you to be a shepherd, you will always a shepherd till the Good and Great Shepherd calls you home.
