Move On Up, Finding Our Purpose in a Transient World

Move On Up

When asked how he wanted to be remembered, Ronald Reagan answered, “I don’t care.  I won’t be here.”  An old-time preacher from a past century once said, “Preach the Gospel. Live out your faith in Jesus. Then be satisfied to die and be forgotten.”  The Apostle Paul said, “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.”  I believe all three of these men understood something profound. No matter how important we are, we are not all that important.   We are only here to give honor and glory to the great Creator of all things and then move on up.

Important people of this generation will be forgotten by the next.  Things that are necessary today will be useless tomorrow.  Up-to-date will become out of date, and cutting-edge will become obsolete.  The sun will rise and the sun will set.  What is built today, the earth will reclaim tomorrow.  Ancient things have already been forgotten, and modern things will soon be ancient.  So, remember your Creator. Know that while this life is only a vapor, the life we have in Jesus is eternal.  Worship Him while you are in this world, and be prepared to move on up.

More and more as I get older, I recognize the temporary nature of earthly things.  Cars that I once thought were so cool now look old and junky.  When I finally get around to buying the latest style clothes, they are no longer the latest style.  Houses that were once home to growing families are now crumbling from the inside out.  New things become old, old things fade away.  Things I once thought were very important, I now realize never were.  God’s mercy alone is new every day. I will live my life honoring Him. This will continue until it is time for me to move on up .

Jesus has called me to be the light of the world. This light must shine as long as I am on this earth.  People may remember my name for a while, but soon they will forget.  I am okay with that, because this world is not my home.  I am just a pilgrim passing through.  One day, my journey will be over, and the Lord will call me home. When He does, I will be ready to move on up.

For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭1‬:‭21‬-‭23‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Down Where the Pavement Ends

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
