The Myth of Kal-el; Superheroes and Presidential Illusions 1

Kal-El Does Not Exist

I have some bad news. Kal-El does not exist. Who is Kal-El?  Well, Kal-El is the Krypton name of Clark Kent, and Clark Kent is the mild-mannered reporter who is Superman. And, of course, we know that Superman always saves the day. He is faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings with a single bound.  He is the all-American hero who stands for “Truth, Justice, and the American way.”

However, Kal-El, who is Clark Kent, who is Superman, does not exist. He is a fictional character who was invented for our inspiration and entertainment. He is not faster than a speeding bullet. He cannot leap tall buildings with a single bound. He cannot save the day. Folks, I like superheroes, but they are not real, and I know it.

It occurs to me that every four years, Americans place their hope in a different kind of Superman. It is called a presidential election. We foolishly hope the next president is our new Superman who will save the day.  But like Kal-El, this new Superman is an invention of someone’s imagination. We hope for truth, justice, and the American way. However, we will only be disappointed. The new president will not save the day.

Understand me now. These words that I speak are not about the presidential election. They are not meant to be for or against anyone who is running for president. Also, I do not want to discourage you from voting; we should all do our part and vote. I want to tackle our misplaced hope. We need to recognize that just like Superman can’t save the day, neither can any president.

So put your hope in Jesus. He is the only One who deserves our absolute trust. He is all-powerful and all-knowing. He is the embodiment of Truth, Justice, and Righteousness. He has defeated doomsday, and no kryptonite formed against Him can prosper. He is the Maker of all things, and in Him, all things are held together. He is the King of Kings, and at His feet, all nations and all presidents will bow.

So, when the time comes, go vote in the presidential election. Before you vote, pray to Christ. Ask Him to guide you as you decide who to vote for. Lay your burdens at His feet. Go to the polls singing, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. On Christ the Solid Rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.”

Yes, it is true; Kal-El does not exist. But Jesus Christ does and always will, and He is the only Superman who will save the day.

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
