Overcoming the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics

Everyone who has ever owned a house knows that caring for it is a constant job. Every day, either the roof needs patching or cleaning, and painting is needed. You think you have everything under control. You prepare to sit down and rest. However, then you find a faucet leaking or a light switch broken. This is because, in the natural order of life, all created things will deteriorate. Everything of value requires a high level of maintenance.

Overcoming Health Issues

This is also true of the human body. If we want to enjoy good health, we must be diligent in maintaining our bodies. This requires us to exercise regularly and to be careful with our diet. As we get older, maintaining our health will probably need medication. So, every week, we will fill our pillboxes and set alarms to remind us to take our pills. This is because, in the natural order of life, all created things will deteriorate. And even our bodies require a high level of maintenance.

Overcoming Corruption

All of this is true because when Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, he unleashed the second law of thermodynamics upon the world.  This law states that when left alone, everything will collapse, break down, or wear out.  When God created this world, it was perfect and incorruptible. The first man, Adam, chose to rebel against God, and sin entered into the world. The curse of sin brought death and destruction. So, we have to work hard to maintain houses and machines, and our bodies or they will deteriorate.

Overcoming Our Sin Nature

But don’t be discouraged. Because of what Jesus did on the cross, we can overcome death and destruction.  Yes, everything on this earth is temporary, and one day it will all rot, rust or burn.  Still, let’s not focus on that which is temporary, focus instead on that which is eternal.

Overcoming Death

In Heaven, there is no corruption, and there is no death or destruction. There will be no medicine in Heaven. God has promised that if we believe in Him, we will not perish. Instead, we will have eternal life. Jesus has prepared for us in Heaven an eternal home.  A house from God that is not made with hands.  A home that will never need any maintenance.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
