10 am Sunday Morning, The Importance of Sunday School in Our Faith Journey

10:00 AM, Sunday Morning

It is 10 am on Sunday morning. I’m sitting in my La-Z-Boy wearing a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. It’s quiet and I feel strange. I feel strange. Almost every other Sunday of my life, at 10 am, I’d be at church. I’d be sitting in a Sunday School Class.

Now, I’m not skipping church this morning. At 11 o’clock, I’m scheduled to preach at a church that’s about 10 minutes from home. I have plenty of time to get there, but I also have time to sit in my La-Z-Boy. In shorts and a T-shirt. At 10 am on Sunday morning. But it sure does feel strange.

As I sit here, I wonder, how do people do this every Sunday? Especially people who profess to be followers of Christ! I don’t mean to sound judgmental. I don’t think your salvation or faithfulness to God depends on you going to Sunday School. But to me a Sunday morning without Sunday School seems, well just empty.

What do I get out of Sunday School? I’ve been a preacher for many years. One of the biggest things I know about God is that I don’t know enough about Him. So, every Sunday, I go expecting to learn something new. Plus, I like the camaraderie that we share in our group. We regularly have get-togethers with biscuits. It’s always my prayer that these will be holy biscuits without any carbs.

By the way, my church home is Deep Creek Baptist Church in Dewy Rose, GA. Pastor Brendon is a great man of God. We have Sunday school classes for all ages with wonderful teachers. If you don’t have a church family, I invite you to join us. And if you join us, I promise you one thing. You’ll come to realize that Sunday School is the best place to be at 10 am on Sunday morning.

From the Bible

“You will guide me with Your counsel, And afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish; You have destroyed all those who desert You for harlotry. But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, That I may declare all Your works.”

Down Where the Pavement Ends

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)

I’ve felt the same way the Sundays we would be coming back from a trip and pass many churches with only a few cars in the parking lot or even none (sad). Sunday school is important to our growth in the Lord.
