The Good Old Days
It is the middle of January in Northeast Georgia. The weatherman is calling this the coldest air mass in several years. It is cloudy, and we expect it to start snowing at any time now. Deborah and I just returned from our morning walk. The cold air stung our noses and toeses. Now I sit by the fire, thinking about the old days. Thank goodness I am retired.
I remember when my job required me to be outside all day on days like today. My feet would feel like chunks of ice and my face would be chapped from the cold wind. Wearing long underwear and a heavy coat, I would endure while thinking about the warm fire at home. Some people call those the good old days. Me? I’m just glad I didn’t have to go to work this morning.
I have fond memories of the good life that I have lived. I often think of the friendship of my coworkers. And I also remember friends and loved ones who are gone. Yes. There are a lot of things I miss about the old days. I miss being able to eat whatever I wanted to. I miss not having to constantly check my blood sugar. I also miss not going to the doctor all the time.
I don’t miss working on the hot, humid days of summer. I don’t miss the damp, cold days of winter either. Nor do I miss struggling to pay the bills. No, the good old days can stay in the past. I wouldn’t go back if I could.
We are blessed to have the memories and lessons from the good old days. It is also good to dream and plan for tomorrow. But today is the day we have. This is the day that the Lord has made and we should rejoice and be glad in it.
It is good to remember the days that are past. It is also right to anticipate the days to come. However, we only have one day to live and Glorify God. And today is that day.
“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Lord, save us! Lord, please grant us success! He who comes in the name of the Lord is blessed. From the house of the Lord we bless you. The Lord is God and has given us light. Bind the festival sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will give You thanks. You are my God; I will exalt You. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever.”
