Making the Right Choices

Every spring, high schools graduate into the world a new class of young adults.  As these young people toss their hats into the air, few of them realize the extent of the coming changes. They are unaware of how much their lives are about to change. They do not know the extent of the upcoming changes. Their lives are about to change drastically. They will face new challenges and opportunities.  From now on, Mama, Daddy, and Grandparents will not be there for every decision they make.

They are adults now. Mama and Daddy will always be willing to give advice. However, these young people will not always listen. And that is as it should be. As I said, they are adults now. They will be responsible for their own choices. This includes the good ones and the bad ones.

Here are some thoughts for those of you who will graduate this year:

Change happens, and it does not seek your approval. The Bible teaches us that “To everything there is a season”.  It then gives a list of things there are times for. All the things that are listed are important.  But these I will mention. There is “A time to keep silent and a time to speak”.  Your life will be very much blessed. You should learn when it is time to speak. Understand when it is time to be silent.

God has you on His mind. He tells us in His Word that He has plans for you. These are plans for your good and not for harm. He plans to give you a future with hope.  I promise you, His plans are better than yours, so follow Him. And make good choices.

You need a life anchor. Harness your heart to God’s kingdom.  Put your trust in God, and He will not forsake you.  This promise I can make with certainty: “God will honor and take care of those who honor Him”.

Make the choice to stand out from the crowd. Blending in is always easy.  But it will leave you ordinary and average.  Stand up and stand out for God. This will be hard and maybe even dangerous. But it will make you an extraordinary person. And this world needs extraordinary people.

Down Where the Pavement Ends

From the Bible

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
