Go and See: Embracing God’s Guidance and Provision

Go And See

A large crowd of people had gathered to hear Jesus teach.  As the day ended the people were hungry, but there was no food.  The disciples thought that Jesus would send the people away, but Jesus wanted them to feed the people.  They told Jesus, “We have no food, we have no money to buy food and there is no place to buy food even if we had the money”.  But Jesus was not concerned with what they did not have.  He asked, “What do you have?”  And then told them to “go and see”.

When they went to see what they had, they returned with five loaves and two fish.

When they handed this to Jesus, He took the bread, blessed it, and divided it. The disciples then took the food and fed the entire crowd.  Everyone was full when they finished and They had twelve baskets filled with leftovers.  The disciples learned that what you don’t have is unimportant when Jesus wants you to do something.  You need to go and see what you do have.

Throughout the Bible, there are many stories of people who did great things for God despite their limitations.  Moses led a nation out of slavery in Egypt.  All he had was a staff and God’s leadership.  David killed the giant Goliath.  All he had was a rock and Godly courage. If God asks you to do something, He will give you the ability to do it.  But you can’t worry about what you don’t have, you’ve got to go and see what you do have.

Go and See

If you are a child of God, He has a calling for you.  But His purpose for your life does not depend on what you have or don’t have.  Sometimes people resist God’s calling because they are afraid, uneducated, or don’t have enough money.  However, God can turn poverty into plenty, fear into strategy, and a limited education into wisdom.  Place your confidence in Jesus.  He can do exceedingly, abundantly above all that you can ask or think because of the power of the Holy Spirit that works in you.   But don’t take my word for it, Go and See.

When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.” But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?” But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
