The Tyranny of The Moment

That which rules right now. With no regard for the future or the past. The tyranny of the moment blinds us to right or wrong. It overrules the fear of God. It bullies us into doing that which we will hate ourselves for. The tyranny of the moment trivializes our regrets and makes the irrational seem rational, for the moment.

Most of us desire to do only that which will please God. Most of us have an ingrained fear of God which demands that we please God. However, the tyranny of the moment even transcends our fear of God, at this moment. As soon as the moment is past the regrets flood in and we tearfully promise God that we will not be tyrannized by the moment again.

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

James 4:7-8 NKJV

Do not focus on resisting the devil, you cannot. He is too strong. Focus on submitting to God, it is His presence that will cause the devil to flee. And that is when the tyranny of the moment will lose its power over you.

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
