He Chose You First

But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 NKJV

Do you remember that old schoolyard ritual of choosing teams? The two oldest or biggest boys would appoint themselves captains, then start picking. They always chose the biggest, the strongest, or the most talented first. One by one, the names were called while the smaller, weaker, or less talented kids stood staring at their toes, hoping and praying that this time they wouldn’t be the last ones picked.

And there was always the one, “maybe it was you” who was not really chosen at all. The team captain who was cursed with the last pick would look at you and say, “I guess I will have to take you”. Then you would play right field and bat last.

I have some good news for you. The greatest Captain of all time has chosen His team, and guess what? He chose you—and He picked you first. The Bible says in Ephesians 1:4 that He chose you before the foundation of the world, that you should be holy and without blame before Him in love.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how God does it. He has chosen every one of us, and we are all His first pick. But I don’t have to understand it; I simply trust Him and know it’s true.

And I am so glad that God chose me.

Please excuse me—I have to go now, the game is starting, and I’m the leadoff batter.

You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.”

Pavement Ends Ministry

After years of serving in a pastoral role in several churches, I retired from leading a church full time, but wanted to stay active in preaching the Gospel. I started writing brief, parable-like devotions that were shared through a radio ministry. At the end of the radio spot, I always invite people to come and see me “down where the pavement ends.” (Which comes from the fact that I literally live at the end of a paved road!)
